Toronto is still determining the extent of the injury after Santander underwent an MRI on Thursday, according to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com.
The 30-year-old has struggled in his first season with the Blue Jays, slashing .179/.273/.304 with six home runs and 18 RBIs after g a five-year, $92.5-million deal in January. The slugger hit 44 homers for the Baltimore Orioles last year.
Santander hasn't recorded a hit since May 24 against the Tampa Bay Rays and has struck out six times in his last five games.
The 2024 All-Star s second baseman Andrés Giménez (quad) and catcher Tyler Heineman (concussion) among Blue Jays position players on the IL.
Toronto recalled outfielder Alan Roden from Triple-A to take Santander's spot on the active roster.
